Ryan Gazzola
Client: Ryan Gazzola & Band
Scope: Concept Ideation, Artist Branding, Visual Identity, Digital Assets, Photography, Music Videos, and Animation.
Role: Designer, Photographer, and Videographer. All elements of a single release and artist branding.
Ryan Gazzola is a Toronto based singer-songwriter who performs live across Canada with a four-piece band. His music is described as “pop songwriting with a love for retro musicianship and musicality”.
Ryan is currently releasing a batch of singles leading up to his album release. My role was to help create his artist identity for the new album and individual releases. The challenge was to produce all the necessary visual assets, and thus I took on the role of designer, photographer, and videographer. The artist identity created for Ryan involved the album theme: “Hues of Heartbreak”. Each single release is a different colour based on the song and the cover artwork is segmented into different hues. These segments animate on the Spotify canvas to the beat of the song. Each release involved a concept shoot, new album art, Spotify canvas, social media assets, and music video.
Please read through the case study to see all three releases.

Ocean Blue
Ryan Gazzola’s latest single is Ocean Blue. It’s a breakup song about a relationship that that is difficult to get over as there are so many fond memories. The song has rather sad lyrics, but is contrasted with it’s upbeat, cheerful melody. Due to this upbeat vibe, the visuals needed to correspond. Thus, instead of using stormy weather visuals – we opted for a tropical vibe. This translated in a light blue colour palette for the single cover and tropical elements in the animated music video.
With Ocean Blue’s release ZYK marketing was used to help promote the song on Spotify and Instagram.

Cyclone
Cyclone was Ryan’s second release. The title reflects the song – a turbulent breakup ballad. The colour purple was chosen to reflect the dark, somber mood. The imagery created was meant to be detached and distance – like the calm before a storm. As you can see, Ryan is further back and looks ominously into the distance for his single cover.
This release was promoted without an agency.

BS’N
BS’N was Ryan’s first single. The song was originally called Bullshittin’ but it was changed to an acronym in order to not be censored. In contrast two his later releases, BS’N is a happy love song. It details the beginning of a romance, when both parties are testing the waters and the passion starts to ignite. As a result of this metaphorical slow burn, we chose orange as the colour for the cover – more intense then yellow, but not full a burning red.
Subculture media was used to promote BS’N on Instagram and a new music video in the works.
